Thomas Curtis
Thomas was born 5 August 1804 in
Wellingborough, the son of Dillingham Curtis and Sarah Wright. He was baptised at West End (Independent or Congregationalist) Chapel on 16
th Sept 1804.
I have been able to trace the "Dillingham" name back to the early eighteenth century: John and Elizabeth Curtis gave birth to a son who was christened Dillingham at St Peters Church, Irthlingborough on the 1
st March 1715. In 1731, John Curtis paid £8.0s.0d for his son to be apprenticed to Master Baker Meeson of Wellingborough.
Thomas worked as a boot or shoe maker.
On 30 October 1823 he married Jane Clark at All Hallows Church, Wellingborough. Their first born child, Dillingham, was born in 1825 and baptised 25 March 1825 at All Hallows. Sadly the child died in 1826 and was buried at All Hallows on 26 Dec 1826, aged 18 months. Their second child also named Dillingham was born in 1827 and baptised on 24 Jan 1828, but he too died later that year, aged 6 months and was buried at All Hallows on 30 Jan 1828 aged 6 months.
In 1830, their daughter Mary was born; baptised in All Hallows 1 Nov 1830. Mary lived at least until 1841. Their second child to survived infancy was
Dillingham, born in 1833 and baptised in All Hallows on 21 May 1833. Sadly, Jane died only a year later in 1834 aged only 28; she was buried at All Hallows 7 Jul 1834.
Thomas married Sarah Bailey from Kilsby on 13 Jan 1835. They had three children: John Bailey in 1835,who was baptised in
Finedon
on 18 Nov 1835; Charles William in 1838 and Sarah in 1839. Tragically, Thomas' wife Sarah died in 1840 aged 38; she was buried at All Hallows 24 Jun 1840. Their daughter, Sarah died later that year aged 1.
Thomas married Rebecca Bailey (probably Sarah's younger sister) from Kilsby during the first quarter of 1841.
Their first child, Sarah, was born in the first quarter of 1842 and their second, Jacob was born in 1844. The third child, Jane was born in 1846, but died in 1848 when she was 2. A second child, named
Jane, was born in 1819. Jacob died when he was 7, in 1851 Thomas and Rebecca went on to have three more children: Jacob in 1852, Ann in 1857 and Tom in 1860.
