Sarah Reed
Sarah was born in Minehead in 1819 or 1820, the daughter of William Reed, mariner and Ann Sellick. She was baptised in St Michael's Church on 20 Feb 1820. She had at least one sibling, brother William who was baptised in St Michael's Church on 2 March 1824.
In 1841 Sarah was working as a Female Servant for John Powell, innkeeper in Wellington Square, Minehead.
On 8 January 1855, she married William Richards, a widower and father of Sophie, Mary Ann and Ellen Richards (aged between 8 and 11), in the Parish Church of Bedminster, at the age of 34, described as a spinster, William's first wife and their infant son, Samuel, had both died six years earlier in 1849. Sarah's father in law, Samuel died shortly after the marriage.
Sarah and William moved back to Somerton, where their only child, Martha Francis Cannon Richards was born on 13 February 1860. Sarah's husband, William died in 1880 at the age of 64. By 1881, Sarah's daughter, Martha was working in Stockport, Cheshire as a school teacher. Sarah continued to live at Hill Head, looking after her daughter, step daughters and grandchildren until her death in 1896, aged 79.
