Martha Frances Cannon Richards
Frances was born in Somerton in 1860, the only child of William Richards and Sarah Reed.
William's first wife, Sarah Barber died in 1849 at the age of 37, leaving three young daughters: Ellen, Mary and Sophia. Their youngest child, Samuel John Cannon Richards died as an infant in the autumn or winter of 1849. as did William's mother, Martha, aged 68.
William died in 1880 at the age of 64. Sarah, his wife continued to live at Hill Head, Somerton looking after her daughter, step daughters and grandchildren until her death in 1896, aged 79.
By 1881, Martha had moved to Stockport, Cheshire, where she was living in Osborne Road and working as a school teacher. At about this period she met Thomas Duckworth, an accountant, married to Esther and father of Herbert and Arthur. Esther had been suffering from Phthisis pulmonalis for more than a year and died from the disease on 19 May 1888.
Martha was residing at 9 Redcliffe Parade, Bristol when she and Thomas were married in St Mary Redcliffe Church on 14 August 1888.
On 15 August 1888 their first child, Edith Richards Duckworth, was born in Somerton, Somerset.
Thomas returned to his home in Heavily, Stockport and Martha joined him
