Rose Ellen Hoyle
Rose and her twin sister, Lilian, were born at 1 Wesleyan Court, Exeter in 1892. The last of eight siblings, they were baptised at St Sidwell's on 21 December 1892 at which time their father,
William was working as a horse drawn tram driver.
By 1901, the family had moved to Kendalls Buildings, off Blackboy Road. The trolley buses were no longer horse driven and William was now employed at the gas works as a painter.
Her mother,
Priscilla died in May 1905 aged 53, when she was living at 17 Albion Place, leaving 12 year old twins Rose and Lilian, 15 year Archie, 17 year old Daisy - as well as Albert, Frederick, and William, motherless. Rose's father William, died suddenly later that year on the way home from working a night shift.

It was one week after Rose and Lilian's thirteenth birthday: the 28 Dec 1905, the anniversary of their mother's birthday.

"
GOOD ADVICE: Exeter Workhouse Trouble, Question of Discipline"
"If everybody at the Workhouse were disobedient, nothing but chaos would prevail there. Try to obey the officials and you will be far more happy." This was the advice given at the Exeter City Police Court yesterday by Mr. C.E.Rowe, who was accompanied on the Bench by Mr.E.F.Widgery, to a young mother who was brought up on a charge of refusing to obey the Master of the Workhouse yesterday. Her name was given as Rose Ellen Hoyle, and she was carrying a baby in her arms.
Mr. Norris, the Master, told the Bench he was sorry to have to bring the case forward, and did so in no vindictive spirit. Defendant's behaviour for some time past, however, had given great trouble. At one o'clock Sunday afternoon it was reported to him that she had refused to obey a nurse, and had declined to complete her uniform or go to the day-room. He had told her previously he should have to take her before the magistrates. She had been insubordinate since January 27th, and the officers had tried to coax her in every way, both for her own sake and her relatives. From February 4th she was under medical observation as the doctor feared there might be mental trouble. She had threatened violence to other inmates, and on one occasion he took a knife from her. On May 11th she was sent to Digbys Asylum, but was discharged from there as quite all right.
(Rose gave birth to a son, Jack Jobson Hoyle, on 27 May 1913 in the City Workhouse Infirmary, 14 Heavitree Rd. Jack was baptised 15 Jun 1913 at Exeter, St. Matthew)( Newspaper report dated 1 July 1913)
)
The Nursery Superintendent at the Workhouse told the Bench that she gave defendant verbal orders when she returned to the House on Saturday night. She had discharged herself on Saturday morning, but came back with a fresh order the sme evening. It was after breakfast on Sunday morning that she began to refuse to obey orders. She was told to go to the day-room, but refused, and also declined to put on a cap as she was told to do. She was given some hours to obey, but at one o'clock the Master and Matron tried to persuade her to put on her cap. She still would not do so.
Defendant, crying, said she understood that she must obey orders, the same as other people, but, she added, "I had a very trying time in the infirmary, and now I cannot get on with the other nurses."
The Chairman gave her kindly advice, and told her that if she obeyed instructions in the future she would hear no more about this case.

In 1918, when Rose was 26, working as a baker and living at 9 Salem Place (off Blackboy Road), Exeter, she married the widower,
Walter Harold Trice. He was working as an attendant and living at the City Workhouse.
At the marriage, Walter claimed that his age was fifty, and that his father was a "Naval Architect". Ten years later, a few days after his death, Rose obtained a copy of Walter's Birth Certificate which showed that he was born in 1860, and would have been 58 and not 50 at the time of his marriage. His father, with whom he had probably had no contact for fifty years, was a commercial clerk. However, he probably grew up in the shadow of his mother's brother,
Edward Reed, a distinguished Naval Architect, 25/11/60

Monica was born on about August 1928. Walter died on 2 October 1928. There may have been some uncertainty regarding Wlater's age when he died, because on 12 October 1928, Somerset House issued a Certificate of Birth for Walter showing that he was actually born on 25 November 1860: his actual age was 58.
Monica died of pneumonia, excascerbated by skalds fron a kettle on 11 July 1930 when she was just 2 years old.
Rose married Sydney Edward Wallis, a boiler fitter, on 8 June 1931. Their first child, Frank, died of broncho pneumonia on 17 January 1932 when he was only 4 days old.
Rose died at 8 Queen's Place, Crediton on 10 November 1951.
Probate was granted to Marjorie Ellen (Trice) Henderson on 3 February 1956:
