William Bray
John Edward Trice's Great Grandfather
William was born in Raddington, between Dulverton and Wiveliscome, during 1848, the son of Robert Bray, an agricultural labourer from Wiveliscombe, and Jane Warren, from Huish Champflower. His parents were married in 1843 and he spent his early years living on the Blackwell Estate, North of Raddington Mill with his parents and siblings, Ann, Robert and Mary.
At some time before 30 March 1861, William went to stay with Thomas Roberts and his wife Jane in Huish Champflower. Thomas was an agricultural labourer and his wife, Jane, like William's mother, also came from Huish Champflower.
William's father, Robert, probably died sometime between 1851 and 1871 and Thomas's wife, Jane probably died between 1861 and 1871.
William's mother, Jane Bray/Warren married Thomas Roberts early in 1871 in Cardiff, when they were both in their forties. The 1871 Census shows the family living in Canton, Cardiff, where 23 year old William was working as a labourer at the iron works and his 25 year old brother, Robert, was working as a coal tipper. The boys step-father was working as a railway labourer.
By 1873, William had a job as a fitter in Canton Cardiff, when he married 23 year old Fanny Hill from the hamlet of Maundown near Wiveliscombe.
