Sarah Ann Hollinshead
Sarah was born at Plants Square, Stafford on 22 June 1845, the youngest daughter of shoemaker, William Hollinshead and his wife, Catherine Booth.
"In 1839 Christ Church was opened to cater for the spiritual needs of the expanding suburb of shoe workers to the north of the town. The vicar was also chaplain to the County Lunatic Asylum, the Infirmary and the Workhouse. With declining congregations, it closed in 1976 and was later demolished to make way for a Sheltered Housing scheme."
Francis Frith
She was baptised at Christ Church in the Parish of Stafford, St Mary and grew up with seven older brothers and sisters. As a young woman, like her siblings, she became skilled at cutting out and making the uppers of shoes and boots. Her father died when Sarah was seventeen, and at about this time she found work as a "clicker" in Finedon near the shoe manufacturing centre of Wellingborough. She married Dillingham Curtis, a shoe factor from Wellingborough on 29 October 1868 when she was 22 and he was 36. Their first child, Clark Booth Curtis was born 15 March 1870, and about this time Sarah's widowed mother, Catherine "Kate" Booth, came to live with the family and stayed with them until her death some sixteen years later. Sarah and Dillingham had seven children between 1870 and 1883: Clark, Tom, Alice, Walter, Arthur, Jessie and Minnie. Minnie was a music teacher and took the name Winifred in 1901.
Their eldest child,
Clark Booth married Elizabeth Reynolds in the summer of 1895.
