Ann, William and Eliza were born at Coombe, Doccombe where James worked as a husbandman, close to his yeoman brothers, Joseph and George. By 1843 James had moved into Moretonhampstead town where he worked as a labourer and his youngest daughter, Louisa was born.
James died in 1845 aged 55, and was buried in Talaton, East Devon.
By 1851 his wife, Elizabeth had moved into Exeter where she was working as a washerwoman and living with her unmarried daughters, Sarah 20, Eliza 13 and Louisa 7.
